A Message to AKC Club Members–
Support the Club Presidents Challenge
We face increasing and unprecedented challenges to our rights to own, breed, and exhibit our beloved dogs. As you are no doubt aware, the radical animal rights movement attempts to discredit America’s responsible breeders and the AKC by influencing media organizations to produce purposefully-misleading news segments. Such attacks are designed to undermine opposition to the extreme anti-animal agenda and our commitment to the future of healthy, responsibly-bred and -owned purebred dogs.

Here are some highlights of measures we are currently tracking on the federal level.
News from the State Capitols
Five state legislatures and the District of Columbia are in regular session and one state is in special session. So far this year, more than 1,100 state bills have been filed that could impact dogs and dog ownership. For the latest information on state and federal bills being tracked by AKC GR, visit the 2013 Legislation Tracking page. This page, updated each weekday, provides the latest bill text, status, and legislative alerts posted by the AKC. Local Issues
The AKC Government Relations Department (AKC GR) assists dog owners with canine legislation issues in their local communities, but we can’t help unless we are aware of the proposal! If you hear of an issue in your city or county, please contact us at (919) 816-3720 or doglaw@akc.org. We will be happy to provide you with the resources, tools and assistance you need to help support and defend responsible dog ownership in your community.

Here are some examples of the local issues currently being addressed by AKC GR.

Director's Letter
This month we celebrate leaders who have demonstrated their commitment to responsible dog ownership. In September, the AKC honored Senator Clark J. Chapin as AKC’s Connecticut Legislator of the Year for his support of reasonable legislation that protects animals and the rights of animal owners. Senator Chapin was presented the James S. Holt Memorial Award for Promotion of Responsible Dog Ownership in Legislation at a recent meeting of the Connecticut Dog Federation. This legislator of the year award provides a way for you, as constituent dog owners, to honor the legislators you work with. If you would like to recommend a legislator for this honor, please contact AKC GR at doglaw@akc.org.

On the local level, Colleen Douglas of the Rogue Valley Kennel Club has been honored with the AKC Community Achievement Award (CAA) for her educational presentations about service dogs and her work to provide assistance to dogs owned by homeless individuals in her community. For fourth quarter awards, CAA recipients are selected based on outstanding Responsible Dog Ownership Day activities. Please click here for more information and to download a nomination form. Fourth quarter nominations are due by November 8.

On behalf of the AKC Government Relations (GR) team, I would also like to celebrate and thank every dog owner, club, and federation for their hard work and dedication to preserving the rights of dog owners. You are the leaders in this ongoing mission and we are honored to support you.

As you know, combatting negative canine legislation is a costly endeavor. We recently launched the 2013 Club Presidents Challenge in which we challenge AKC clubs to contribute to the AKC Canine Legislative Support Fund (CLSF). Donations to the CLSF go toward supporting positive legislation, securing formal representation for the interests of responsible dog owners and breeders in Congress and statehouses, AKC legislative conferences, and educating legislators about responsible and fair policy for dog breeding and ownership. We sincerely thank you for your continued support.

All the best,

Sheila Goffe
